NEW: Talk for Writing – An Introduction to Fiction Writing

Course overview:
This training day will focus on practical strategies for developing children as storytellers, poetry performers and writers. We will look at the link between learning model texts, drawing on quality literature and developing the craft of writing. The training will explore how to help children deepen their understanding of what makes good writing, building up a store of patterns and writing techniques. We’ll visit classrooms to see TFW in action as well as looking at film clips of shared writing to contextualise elements of the training.

Course Content:

  • An overview of the TFW process in fictional writing and poetry.
  • A detailed exploration of the 3 stages: Imitation, Innovation and Independent Application, including:
    • practical strategies for developing storytelling;
    • toolkit generation and skills progression from nursery to Y6;
    • short-burst writing and the power of poetry in language acquisition;
    • reading as a reader and writer;
    • shared and guided writing;
    • how to drive independence and creativity;
    • marking and feedback.

As well as being an accredited Talk for Writing Trainer, Jamie is Head of Warren Teaching School Alliance and Deputy Head & Head of Literacy at Warren Road Primary School. As a self-proclaimed ‘Talk for Writing’ and grammar nut, he is passionate about instilling a love of English in people of all ages and thrives on raising standards through inspirational training and development.
